What is the Pro Volleyball Federation?

The Pro Volleyball Federation is the premier women’s professional volleyball league in North America. Slated to begin its inaugural season in January 2024, the league represents an innovative, professional, and genuinely competitive platform for the sport.

At the heart of the Federation is the concept of ‘REAL pro volleyball’, a term that underscores the league’s commitment to maintaining a high standard of play, ensuring fair team ownership, and professional management, all under a robust financial model that prioritizes players’ welfare.

Why Now?

The formation of the Pro Volleyball Federation comes at a time when there’s growing recognition of volleyball as a premier team sport, especially at the collegiate level. Women’s volleyball has become the third-most watched live college sport on television, trailing only behind football and men’s basketball. The Federation aims to capitalize on this momentum and provide a platform for young American players to play professionally without having to leave their home country.

Who’s Behind the Federation?

The league’s founders have an impressive pedigree in sports, with Super Bowl-winning quarterback Trent Dilfer, and volleyball stalwarts Cecile Reynaud, and Laurie Corbelli leading the way. Together, they bring decades of experience in managing teams and leagues at both professional and collegiate levels.

While initially planned for 10 teams, the league later confirmed that eight teams would compete in the inaugural season. The first franchise was awarded to Grand Rapids, Michigan, making it the first city to host a Federation team.

The second team, based out of Omaha, Nebraska, boasts an exciting blend of sports and music, with NFL quarterback Joe Burrow and singer-songwriter Jason Derulo as the team owners. The team has now been named the Omaha Supernovas.

Additional franchises have been confirmed in several other major cities, further broadening the Federation’s footprint. These include Atlanta, Georgia; Columbus, Ohio; San Diego, California; and Orlando, Florida. They hope to be at 8 teams by the start of the season.

A Livable Wage and More for Players

A standout feature of the Federation is its commitment to its players. It becomes the first pro volleyball league in the United States to provide a living wage for its athletes, with first-year base salaries on par with those of WNBA players.

“This is the first volleyball league in the United States that will be offering their players a living wage”

Stephen Evans, Co-Founder, Pro Volleyball Federation

But it doesn’t stop there. The Federation will also share league revenues with its players from day one. Additional compensation will be available based on achievement and postseason advancement, marking a significant milestone for the advancement of women’s sports in North America.

Conclusion

I know my daughter, who has been practicing her spikes, serves and other volleyball skills at home and at local Omaha youth volleyball clubs, is going to love being able to go to games. What’s also intriguing is the mix of experienced head coaches. Coaches like Todd Dagenais, Ángel Pérez, Cathy George, and Shelton Collier bring a wealth of volleyball knowledge and leadership to their respective teams, promising a high level of play and competitiveness.

While some details, such as team arenas and head coaches for Orlando and San Diego, are yet to be announced, what’s certain is that the formation of the Pro Volleyball Federation heralds an exciting era in women’s professional volleyball. The league’s dedication to maintaining a high standard of play, ensuring genuine team ownership, professional management, and a strong financial model that supports players, sets the stage for a revolutionary change in the sport.
